The Global Incidents of Violence Database can be searched by all of the variables we collect. Currently, we offer data gathered through country implementations and international media reports. In the future we would like to code and add historical data gathered through other in-country monitoring initiatives, and collaborate further with ongoing or future efforts by other organizations.
The purposes of the EVER project were, broadly, to improve our understanding of the patterns of electoral violence, and to increase the capacity of civil society groups to monitor and mitigate such violence. The data, then, was collected in support of those goals. The monitoring data for any one country is representative and not comprehensive; IFES strives to offer insight into the kinds of violence observed, but not to provide an accounting of every incident of violence around the world.
We now divide the data into Field Reports (from monitors on the ground) and International Media Reports.
At a minimum, to be entered in the database, the Field Reports and International Media Reports must have:
In addition to this, the Field Report Incident must have:
The Database itself also has data quality control functions built in to ensure that required information is gathered for each incident. Certain fields are required before an incident can be saved, and text boxes such as that connected to the Other (specify) entry are required.
